S. Todd Farris is a shareholder at Friebert, Finerty & St. John, S.C. Todd graduated with honors from University of Wisconsin Law School in 1984. After graduation, he accepted a one-year appointment as a law clerk to the Honorable Paul C. Gardsky, presiding judge of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District IV. He joined the firm in January, 1987.
Todd’s practice focuses on business, insurance, construction, environmental and real estate litigation and appeals, including eminent domain, regulatory takings and constitutional challenges to the right to take property. Notable cases include, DeChant v. Monarch Life Ins. Co., 200 Wis. 2d 559, 547 N.W.2d 592 (1996) (established attorney fees as damages for bad faith); Sokagogon Chippewa Community (Mole Lake Band of Lake Superior Chippewa) v. Babbitt, 961 F. Supp. 1276 (W.D. WI 1997) (overturned a decision of the Department of Interior based upon improper political influence); Smith v. Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study, 218 Wis. 2d 164, 578 N.W.2d 208 (Ct. App. 1998) (preserved the right of a Yeshiva school to operate in a residential area); and Israel v. Israel, 234 Wis.2d 149, 610 N.W.2d 511 (Ct. App. 2000) (successfully persuaded the trial court that the parties to 99-year leases were in fact partners and avoided default).
In addition to his trial practice, Todd represents property owners, contractors, developers and businesses in real estate, business and municipal law matters, including acquisitions, leasing, entitlements, business organizations, zoning, licensing and construction issues.
Todd is admitted to practice before the Wisconsin Bar, Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
Todd is a graduate of Riverside High School and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. For fun, he enjoys playing rock and acoustic guitar, golf, roller-blading, travel and is a huge Packers and Badgers fan.
